The Mississippi River does get effected by tides as the tide changes can cause flooding. In 1812 there was red tide which was caused by an earthquake. It also caused the river to flow backwards.

Recreation

The people of the Mississippi River use it for travelling, fishing, camping and holidaying.
You can swim in the National Parks and camping areas otherwise people do not swim in the Mississippi River because it is polluted and has dangerous creatures lurking through it.
Every year there are many events held on the Mississippi River these are just a few;
-Steamboat Day June 14-19
-Arts Fair all of June
-Great River Bridge Race in May from Iowa to Illnois
-The largest Rodeo east of the Mississippi River.

Transport

People use boats to bring in supplies and to go on holidays or for recreation.People drive across bridges so they can travel to go to work.
The Mississippi river has 29 locks to help big boats go through rocky parts of the river.
The largest boats that can travel through the Mississippi Rver are River boats, Cruise liners and Steamboats. Most of theses are for holiday purposes.
Cargo ships pass through the Mississippi River as well, carrying supplies.

Importance

People use the Mississippi River for work, recreation, their water supply, transporting food supplies and for travelling on.

The Mississippi is important for survival because it is a major river so it is important to the wild life. It attracts flora and fauna.
It allows fresh water to iirigate farmland.Its important for boats to bring in supplies and their cargo.
52% of the nations corn and 41% of the nations soybean export are carried up the Mississippi River,so it is important for commercial purposes.
It is part of an alluvial plain. Cotton,corn,soybeans,grain,suger and rice are grown on the Mississippi River, so it has a very important agricultural purpose.

The Mississippi is polluted because for many years bad farming practices have made it full of chemicals.

Water Quality/problems.

The Mississippi is polluted and it is not cleaner than ten years ago. People still fish there though. In some areas areas it says no fishing, which is closer to the factories but in the National Parks and camping areas it is safe to fish.
The Mississippi river is generally dirty because in 1980 the Chicago river was extremely and polluted from factory and waste and was filled with garbage, the garbage went in to the Mississippi River creating a large problem.
Farming practices of the past have also leaked pesticides and chemicals into it..
The government is trying to find an effective way to recycle the water and to keep all parts of the Mississippi River clean and safe.

History

There is a legend about a Man eating catfish.

This is a poem about the Mississippi river.
Majestic stream! along thy banks,
In silent, stately, solemn ranks,
The forests stand, and seem with pride
To gaze upon thy mighty tide;
As when, in olden classic time,
Beneath a soft, blue Grecian clime,
Bent o'er the stage, in breathless awe,
Crowds thrilled and trembled, as they saw
Sweep by the pomp of human life,
The sounding flood of passion's strife,
And the great stream of history
Glide on before the musing.
There, row on row, the gazers rise;
Above, look down the arching skies;
O'er all those gathered multitudes
Such deep and voiceful silence broods,
Methinks one mighty heart I hear
Beat high with hope, or quake with fear;--
E'en so yon groves and forests seem
Spectators of this rushing stream.
In sweeping, circling ranks they rise,
Beneath the blue o'erarching skies;
They crowd around and forward lean,
As eager to behold the scene--
To see, proud river! sparkling wide,
The long procession of thy tide--
To stand and gaze, and feel with thee
All thy unuttered ecstasy.
It seems as if a heart did thrill
Within yon forests, deep and still,
So soft and ghost-like is the sound
That stirs their solitude profound.

1865 April 27, Sultana: boiler explosion on Mississippi River steamboat It´s a wooden ship from 1881 which were sunk by a german submarine.
CONCLUSION
The Mississippi River is an amazing river that runs through a great part of North America. There are interesting critters living in it and crazy things that have happened on it like, the bridge collapse and the current running backwards because of the Earthquakes. It has been interesting learning about this river.

IMPORTANCE
The river is probably the most important river in the world in the survival catogery.
The river is used alot for commercial uses.The Mississippi plays alot
of roles,for transport and for living purposes.The Mississippi is not used for agriculture.
The water from the Mississippi River is used in all sorts of cities.

PROBLEMS

The Mississippi is not at all cleaner than it was 10 years ago.
You most likely can not eat the fish from the river.
The river is almost allways dirty because of commercial use.
The reason why you would say the mississipii is dirty is because
it is not clear,It has rubbish floating,The fish are dead and
the commercial companies are spurting out pollution every second.
If you were to drink some water you would have to go through a big progress
to make it clean.
